Sussex Clean Air Conference
09.10.25
Three rides went to the AQ conference, at the University of Sussex Falmer from Brighton Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital; from Sackville House, Lewes; and from Eastbourne District General Hospital.
We were fortunate to have borrowed a handlebar mounted AQ (particulate matter) monitor from Longfonds who have been using them to do projects with school children.
Setting off from Eastbourne at dawn
Most of the route was on superb safe cycle lanes with great tarmac surface, largely traffic free and often separated from the main road by distance & a hedge.
All welcome at rides to the (free) Sussex Air Quality Conference at University of Sussex Falmer, https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/sussex-air-quality-conference-tickets-1237192980509?aff=oddtdtcreator Oct 9th.
The conference is being organised by Sussex Air Quality Group most of whom are working in the local authorities around Sussex and the aim is to show the links between air quality and health and inform policy makers to support a change policy and infrastructure in Sussex.
It seemed a good opportunity to have a bike ride to the conference to bring people together, raise awareness and encourage health care professionals, to show the need for active travel and clean air. Some staff will use pool bikes from SCFT a great alternative to driving for community jobs.
There are three cycle rides going to the conference from:
- Eastbourne, (leaving from Eastbourne General Hospital at 7am)
- Brighton (leaving at 8am from the Royal Alex Children's Hospital) or
- Lewes (leaving from Malling Community Centre, Spences Ln, Lewes BN7 2HQ at 8 am.
They are all going to the University of Sussex in Falmer. A free breakfast will be provided for riders if we know you are coming!
If you'd like to join us riding see here: please email jacqueline.gordon3@nhs.net so we can judge numbers and order food.
The idea is that the rides are inclusive and about raising awareness, not going fast, supporting each other and looking at cycle infrastructure. Please do get in touch if you would like to ride - we need to know numbers, and if people are happy to be a ride leader, sweeper at the back or a confident cyclist to support less confident ones. Please share in your networks, thank you.
We hope to get a lot of publicity for the rides with staff riding in uniforms to show their professions - all welcome
